you must go alone

Hey friend,

Today I’m talking about step #5 of An Education In The World

To travel the world and live in countries far from what you know. To learn the languages, experience the people, to fall in love with the world.

The truth is, you don’t need travel to grow. “Technically,“ everything can be done from exactly where you are. However in my experience- travel unlocks something deeper, that would be very hard to create at home. I dare say impossible.

For these reasons…

1. Travel forces you to step away & let go of all that you know. To release the ideas, the expectations and values of the environment that you were raised- and to discover what is actually meaningful to you- maybe for the first time.

2. Space to create a new identity. The reason so many people are unable to step into sustained growth- is because they are in an old environment that continues to reaffirm their old identity.

3. Presence. When you are somewhere new, you get out of autopilot and you become much more present to life itself. The longer you stay in the same place, the more comfortable it becomes and just naturally you become less aware and you notice less things.

4. The unknown. The great unknown of the world awakens something deep into the heart of man, that cannot be put into words. To go to ends of the world, is the greatest invitation to go the ends of yourself. The unknown will reveal and invite you in, to the great unknown of what it is that you truly are. The unknown is the greatest adventure into you. Life awaits for all of us, in the unknown.

And so, we all have different definitions of travel.

So to be clear..

  • This is not a contiki tour

  • This is not a 3 month euro summer trip with your friends

  • Its a one way flight with no return

  • To a country that doesn’t speak your native language/s

  • Where you can easily escape the expat/ nomad bubble (no Bali for Australian's)

  • You can become integrated into a new community with a different culture, values system, ideas etc.

  • And you go alone, without your mates or girlfriend/ boyfriend from your hometown. You must be willing to go beyond loneliness. Because you are the only person who can live your life.

Step #6 tomorrow.
